Throughout my entire childhood and teenage years I was always very sporty, but always struggled with major weight and nutrition issues, creeping in and out of the levels of overweight and obesity. I was a competitive swimmer and horse rider and also played basketball and netball through the summer and winter seasons, but nonetheless continued to eat badly and maintain an unhealthy weight range. In my later high school years I yo yo dieted, losing large amounts of weight and then putting it back on. Nothing worked for me on a long term basis and I was miserable, lacked self confidence and self respect.
One day I decided to make a change, I started on a calorie controlled eating program and started hitting the gym, the weight started falling off and my fitness skyrocketed. I felt amazing but started to feel like the excersise wasn't challenging enough and I needed something new. I was introduced to a beach bootcamp run by 2 of the trainers from Raw Edge Crossfit, at the end of my first session one of the trainers recommended that I head up to Raw Edge and check out the sessions and what the box had to offer. Given the fact that I live so far away, it took me a while to take the drive up to check it out. I finally did and have never looked back. I walked in the front door of the gym and fell in love with everything about it, the people, the atmosphere, the equipment, and the way in which the trainers pushed and encouraged each and every client throughout what looked to be some extremely gruelling workouts.
The first WOD I did consisted of wall balls, box jumps and kettle bell swings, we were put into groups and I was welcomed straight into a group with open arms and smiles, I didn't feel like a newbie and was made to feel right at home.
Just over 2 years on and I am more in love with the sport, the people and the box each and everyday. Crossfit has changed my life, the community as a whole is an absolutely amazing community to be a part of. Raw Edge is not just a gym to me anymore, the people have become a second family to me, the box has become my second home, somewhere I know I can go to feel better after a bad day. Proof of this being I travel from Canning Vale to Wangara sometimes 6 or 7 times a week to train. I have become a far more confident person, I am fitter, healthier and stronger than I have ever been and most importantly, I have found happiness within myself, being happy in myself allows me to be a better person to other people and a better mother to my amazing children, who have also been welcomed into the Rex Family and who have made friends of their own. Rex is family friendly, which is very important to me as it means that the kids can come along with me when I train, sometimes they will join in or often they will sit and cheer on the members of the box.
Since starting the sport I have competed in 2 Crossfit Games Opens as well as many team competitions.
The owners Sam and Brian along with the trainers and coaches have worked hard to build a strong, supportive, motivational Crossfit family and I cannot commend them enough on the amazing work they have done. A special mention must go to Robbo, who introduced me to the box and has played a major role in my growth and development over the last 2.5 years.
I highly recommend anyone wanting to give Crossfit a crack doing so at Raw Edge, you will be welcomed with open arms and in good hands under the coaching expertise of the likes of Brian Beck, Crossfit Games Masters Competitor and several other coaches/trainers who have competed at a national level.
I just want to say that I could not wipe the smile off my face when we completed the 8 Weeks of Bootcamp. It has been a fantastic 8 weeks of blood, sweat and tears – well not quite.
To share a little background, I had always had this goal to be fit at 40. That goal was set many years ago after having kids and retiring from competitive Basketball and my mates jokingly said that it was a smart goal because I had years to achieve it and didn’t even have to worry about it for now. Well in January 2011 I will turn 39 and fit at 40 sounded like it was going to pass me by, until I saw your banner at the local park and said to my kids – I’m going to sign up for that and as they say the rest is history.
I’ve gone from passing out in bed after the very first session, falling asleep in my car outside of the office, to feeling great and making a few gains along the way.
You have always made it interesting to say the least and not repetitive in any way shape or form. I’ve learnt many new things like kettle bells, Turkish lifts, sumo dead lift, burpees, mountain climbers, tyre pulls, tyre lifts, tyre jumps and my new found friend Janine etc . . . and loved the variety. Your gentle but firm but encouraging coaching has been great and I’ve gone from ladies push ups to at least now doing 10 Man Push ups. I’ve got a long way to go to get my full set of ‘Guns’ but at least I feel like I’m packing a ‘Pistol’ and have gone from a ‘Keg’ to a ‘Two Pack’, only 4 more to go to get my 6 Pack.
So in summary, love what you guys do and I will be going away on holiday’s feeling fit, healthy and excited about doing active stuff with my wife and kids and setting a positive example for them all.
Keep it up and you really have made a positive difference in my life.
Thank you and see you at the next session.
Thankyou to Brian and the team at RAW EDGE FITNESS for all your support but most of all for showing me that if you put your mind to it we can all achieve so much more than we realize. Can't wait for the bigger and better things to come ...... 2011 CrossFit Sectionals !!
"Can you please pass my thanks onto everyone at Raw Edge, particularly Brian, Aimee and Dan. I really enjoyed the last 8 weeks and am impressed with the results. I loved the variety of each training session and everyone is just so friendly. Thanks heaps!"
